Not medical advice
Everything published here is personal writing and general information. It is not medical, psychiatric, psychological, or therapeutic advice, it is not a diagnosis, and it is not a substitute for care from a qualified professional who knows your situation. Nothing here creates a therapeutic relationship.
If you are physically dependent on alcohol
This matters more than anything else on this page. Stopping suddenly after sustained heavy drinking can be genuinely dangerous — withdrawal can cause seizures and delirium tremens, and it can be fatal. It is one of the few substances where quitting without support carries real physical risk.
If you drink heavily and daily, speak to a doctor before you stop. Medically supervised withdrawal exists, it is routine, and asking for it is not an admission of anything.
In an emergency
In Switzerland:
- 144 — ambulance
- 143 — Die Dargebotene Hand, free and confidential, day and night
- 147 — for children and young people
- 112 — general European emergency number
If you are elsewhere, use your local emergency number. If you are in immediate danger, call now rather than reading further.
One person's experience
What worked for one person is not a protocol. Recovery is not uniform, the research is still moving, and anything written here should be held loosely and checked against your own circumstances and the people treating you.
